Why Your Hair Needs Natural

Why Your Hair Needs Natural

Introduction to Natural Haircare Products

At Toby & Rosie, we’re just as passionate about natural hair care as we are about our natural skincare products and the environment. Our philosophy comes down to creating products for your skin and hair using ingredients that are as raw as possible. That way, you’re experiencing the wonders and effectiveness of nature to transform your skin and breathe some life back into it, all while not hurting the environment.

The Benefits of Natural Shampoo Bars & Natural Conditioner Bars

Once you learn about all the chemicals used in modern shampoos, the benefits of natural shampoo bars make a lot of sense. At the bottom of his article, we’ll tell you all about the ingredients that ruin your hair, but dry and itchy scalp, dandruff, and dry/frizzy hair are just a few. The silicones and sufflates used to clean the hair in the shampoos are also absorbed through the skin and into your system.

Natural shampoos are derived from ingredients that are organically farmed, which means you don’t need to be concerned about what is absorbed into your system is a synthetic chemical. Nature also means they are also great for the environment and won’t harm our rivers and oceans. They won’t dry out your scalp or disrupt the scalp’s natural oil glands that regulate the pH. Since your scalp won’t constantly be dried out and irritated from the chemicals, natural shampoo bars can also promote hair growth through healthier hair follicles.  Natural conditioner bars will also be gentler on your hair and if you color your hair, they won’t strip the dye as sulfates and alcohols will.

What You Need to Know Before Switching To Natural Shampoo & Conditioners

So now that you’re ready to buy natural shampoo bars and natural conditioners bar, there are few things to look out for when purchasing. First is, the fewer ingredients the better. Followed by a close second of “if you can’t pronounce it, don’t buy it”, as the chemical-based ingredients are quite difficult to pronounce and decipher what they actually are and where they are derived from. As the name “Natural” implies, the ingredients should be found in nature, such as fragrances derived from the essential oils of fruits and plants.

There are a few points about using natural shampoo and conditioner that differ from the chemical-based products you’re used to. At first, it’s going to take a few days of use for you to adapt to natural shampoo bars. You’ll notice that you don’t get that full lather, bubbles, and tingling sensation that sulfates provide in chemical-based shampoos. While natural shampoo bars don’t lather as much, they’re still working, but you’ll need to rinse your hair more thoroughly than before. It will also take a few uses before your scalp and hair adapt to your new routine, but when they do you’ll likely notice your hair’s texture improve and some people even notice improvements in hair growth.

Top 11 Harmful Shampoo Ingredients

If all the benefits and products we listed above weren’t enough to convince you to switch to all-natural shampoo and conditioners, then maybe discussing the ingredients in modern shampoos and conditioners will. Non-natural shampoos today are made of synthetic chemicals and the mere thought of washing our hair with chemicals sounds ridiculous. Your scalp is considered to be the most absorbent part of your body, which means that whatever you put on your scalp can find its way into your bloodstream. Not to mention that when we wash these products out of our hair, they find there way into our oceans, lakes, and rivers and harm wild-life and even contribute to climate change. Certainly, makes you reconsider putting chemicals in our hair doesn’t? Take a look at this definitive list of shampoo ingredients that are harmful to you and the environment:

  1. Sulfate: Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) & Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

Both Ammonium Lauryl and Sodium Laureth Sulfates are very strong detergents that are used to clean your hair. But the problem is that also strips the oil and sebum off your scalp when you wash it out and that can leave your hair damaged and brittle.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a foaming agent and causes the tingling sensation that we’ve been trained to think means “it’s working”. This is also a common ingredient in household cleaners if you needed further convincing to stay away.

  1. Parabens

This substance is used as a preservative for shampoos and conditioners to keep bacteria from growing inside the bottle. Studies have shown that parabens can promote growth in estrogen-sensitive breast cancer cells and the chemical itself mimics estrogen and is believed to affect hormone levels.

  1. Alcohol (IPA or PrOH)

You want to stay away from shampoos that use Isopropyl or propanol alcohols. These types of alcohol are also used as antiseptics and will dry out your scalp and hair.

  1. Diethanolamine (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA)

The purpose of these chemicals is to work as emulsifiers and foam agents. Essentially, they enable water-soluble and oil-soluble ingredients to be blend together. However, a study conducted by the National Toxicology Program in 1998, researchers found an association between the topical application of DEA and DEA related chemicals (like TEA) cancer in animals, but the effects on humans are unclear. While the European Commission has banned DEA in cosmetics, they remain legal to use in the U.S.

  1. Formaldehyde (HCHO)

Formaldehyde is most famously known for its use as an embalming fluid...yuk. Shampoo manufacturers will also use this as a preservative, but it is most commonly referred to as quaternium-15. It is known to be a human carcinogen and has been proven to be absorbed through the skin in animal testing. Quaternium-15 was banned from cosmetics in the E.U. in 2017 but remains legal in the U.S.

  1. Sodium Chloride (NaCI)

Sodium chloride is also known as salt and its purpose in shampoos and conditioners is a thickener to provide a more consumer-friendly consistency. Of course, we all know that salt can cause dry and itchy skin and can irritate your scalp if this is an issue you suffer from already.

  1. Polyethylene Glycols (PEG)

PEGs are petroleum-based compounds that are used as thickening, softeners, and moisture carrying agents in many cosmetic products, but mainly as thickeners in shampoos and conditioners. There have been studies into the potential of PEGs being human carcinogens, but the evidence has been inconclusive so far. With natural shampoos and natural conditioners available….it’s best to just avoid these too.

  1. Dimethicone (PDMS)

PDMS is a silicon-based organic polymer that is widely used in a ton of skin and hair products. The problem with PDMS is that it builds up in your hair and cause that heavy look and greasy feel. Unfortunately, since it forms a protective layer over your hair, it also clogs the pores on your scalp, stops moisture and nutrients coming in, and can cause scalp irritation.

  1. Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB)

Cocamidopropyl betaine is a surfactant that is derived from coconut oil and helps create that thick lather and soften hair and breaks the surface tension with water which allows dirt and oils to be cleaned away. However, it is often paired with dimethylaminopropylamine, which can cause skin irritation and can be particularly problematic from sufferers of allergies, rosacea, and eczema.

  1. Triclosan (TCS)

Triclosan is an antibacterial chemical placed in a wide variety of consumer goods but was banned from being used in antibacterial soaps when it was found to be both ineffective and can potentially lead to cancer and disruption of hormone production. Shockingly, it is still used in toothpaste, shampoos, and deodorants.

  1. Retinyl Palmitate (RP)

Retinyl palmitate is a form of Vitamin A and commonly used in facial skincare products to remove wrinkles and dark spots. There have been multiple studies into the side effects of retinyl palmitate and several tests on mice led to increases in cancer.  may include cancer, reproductive problems, and organ toxicity. EWG is calling for makers of sunscreen to remove it from their products and several E.U. countries are discussing banning this ingredient in cosmetics.
